Course Description

This three-quarter sequence will examine the history of ideas in the 20th Century, from 1900 through to 2001. The Autumn course will focus on how ideas come to terms with the new post-Darwinian sciences, through the Great War, the rise of mass movements, and the crisis of Great Depression. It will emphasize the relation between politics and society, with contemporary reflection on the meaning of historical events. Rather than a survey, this class will use selections from primary source documents published in the period, supplemented by the works of a modern historian, to illuminate the development of the world in the 20th Century. Winter 2025 will examine the period between 1932 and 1968, from the Depression through World War II and the Cold War. Spring 2023 will focus on the period from 1968 to 2001. There are no prerequisites; students may take one, two, or all three courses.
