Course Description

In celebration of Shakespeare Theater’s 2017-2018 season, the University of Chicago’s Graham School is offering a one day seminar focusing on key women characters from three provocative plays: The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, and Friedrich Schiller’s Mary Stuart..

During the Renaissance era, women emerged as queens, matriarchs and key literary figures. In this seminar, we will consider the roles and character of three strong-willed women, two fictional and one historical. In Shakespeare and Schiller, their plays included powerful women characters who helped redefine Western Civilization.
