Course Description

Simultaneously exorticized and portrayed as victims of religions oppression, Muslim women have long been the topic of intense scrutiny and debate. This seminar provides a historical survey and exploration of the status and reality of women in Islamic world. From an examination of how the Quran and Islamic law affected the place of women in their societies to the historical developments in recent centuries, we will begin to chart how the place of women in Islamic societies have never been frozen in time but reflected the dynamic global processes of change. In so doing, we will critique notions of oppression and subjugation and explore how women have been agents within the Islamic world. Specific topics of discussion will include: women and the emergence of Islam; women’s movements in relation to radicalism, secularism, and nationalism; women’s religious practices; recent controversies over veiling; and Muslim women in the non-Islamic world. The format will include lectures, panel discussions, films, and class discussions.
