Course Description

This continuing seminar picks up in book 4 – the immediate aftermath of the failed attempt to resolve the underlying conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans with a mano-a-mano between Paris & Menelaus. The Olympian gods instigate the two sides to resume (or begin?) battle in earnest, leading to the aristeia of Diomedes (in book 5) - even as the absence of Achilles looms over the war. We’ll read aloud & translate 100 lines per session of the poem, with special attention this quarter to attempts at finding a historical basis for the events of the Iliad. Prerequisite: At least one year of introductory ancient Greek, preferably Homeric, but  Attic or koine Greek are also fine.
