Course Description

With China’s phenomenal economic and social transformations in recent decades, leading ethnic Chinese filmmakers have arrived on the global stage and a few Chinese films have become internationally acclaimed. This course will focus on major films created by ethnic Chinese filmmakers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore. We will discuss each selected film in historical and cultural context. We will also examine how film producers present social trends and present-day life issues in contemporary Chinese societies. Furthermore, each class section will be provided with a clip analysis of a selected film, enhancing audience’s understanding of changing social, cultural realities in mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
