Course Description

This course introduces Islamic traditions, devotional practice, artistic expressions, and intellectual and social history. The course begins with the study of Islamic origins and how these inform differences in belief and practice. We will study the structure and development of Muslim communities and traditions from the early period to the present. We will focus on the importance of the life of the prophet Muhammad, Islamic law, theology, philosophy, mysticism and belles-lettres in classical Muslim societies.
