Course Description

This course considers the nonurban noir. These films reflect the postwar migration from the city to the suburbs, and suggest that the dark side of humanity is scarcely limited to the urban environment. Directed by American masters and European émigrés, the films examine American social issues through what the studios may have considered mere secondary entertainments. In the wilderness outside of Los Angeles, in seaside resorts, on the new interstate highways, or as far as the Mexican border, the nonurban noir reminds us that there is no real sanctuary from human nature.
