Course Description

This course examines filmmaking in the city in the 1960s, considering distinctly local experimental and documentary filmmakers, filmmakers who began their careers in the city, and Hollywood productions that used Chicago as a location. Inspired by American independents and the French nouvelle vague, the films feature members of the Compass Players and Second City, and Chicago cultural icons like Nelson Algren and Ken Nordine. They also depict in cinema verité style the Democratic National Convention of 1968, and represent the history and transformations of the city in a tumultuous decade.
