Course Description

When might violence be permissible and why? The Middle Ages produced several phenomena of violence employed for or linked to religious aims. Were these manifestations of ignorance and authoritarianism? What has surprised many is the rationale and worldview behind these phenomena. This course will examine three famous phenomena that echo today through the politics of post-colonialism, in contemporary questions of censorship and free expression, and the continuing shadow of anti-Semitism. What was the aim and character of the Crusades? How did the Inquisition function and to what end? Why were Jewish communities marginalized, attacked, and how did they adapt or cope to survive?
