Course Description

Jane Austen (1775-1817) lived in a tumultuous era during which political revolutions in America and France and the Industrial Revolution in Britain transformed the world. This course will explore the social, cultural, political, and economic context Austen worked under. We will read some of Austen’s own work as well as examine that of other leading figures of the age. We will explore the consequences of the American War, the rise of a 2nd British Empire, slavery and abolitionism, evangelical religion, gender and other social issues, industrialization, and political instability. You will come to know the history of Britain in an exciting and crucial half century.
