Course Description

This course presents a chronological survey of the history of art through an examination of canonical artists and artworks from the 1850s to the early 1970s. We will start with the beginnings of Modernism in France during later 19th century. We will then turn our focus to spread of avant-garde movements on both sides of the Atlantic during the early 20th century. We will conclude by studying developments in art in the United States during the post-WWII period. This is Part III of a four-part series. While helpful to take all three sequentially, this is not required and each class is not cumulative.
