Course Description

By the 1930s, democracy was in crisis worldwide, as radicalism of the left and right, Fascism and Communism, challenged its legitimacy on economic, political, and philosophical grounds. This class will focus on American debates over the meaning of democracy in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, as scientists and philosophers sought to reestablish a democratic way of life through the Great Depression, World War II, and the early Cold War.
