Course Description

Over the past century and a half American writers have created a body of literature great in its illumination into the deeps of the human condition and our own lives. This course offers a wide range of themes and authors. A sampling includes satire and comedy by Thomas Berger in his story “Gawain and the Green Knight,” pathos and cruelty by Dorothy Parker in “Horsie,” conflicts between parents and children by Saul Bellow in “Seize the Day,” and the tragedy of the human condition by John Cheever in “The Enormous Radio.” Class will be run in seminar form where all will be encouraged to contribute insights and questions and learn from each other.
