Course Description

The Qur'an has been inspiring and guiding Muslims since its revelation in the early seventh century. Intended for a general audience with minimum or no knowledge about the Qur'an, this course introduces the Muslim scripture by focusing on the background to the text, its history, content, structure, various interpretations, liturgical use, the process of its canonization, and contemporary readings. Besides lectures, secondary readings, recitations, and sample chapters from the Qur'an, the course will also address the role of the Qur'an in everyday lives and thought of Muslims.
