Course Description

One of the last plays of Euripides, composed in a time of political gridlock and never-ending war, the Iphigenia at Aulis dramatizes the story of the first piece of collateral damage in the Greek expedition against Troythe sacrifice of Agamemnons daughter to appease the goddess Artemis. Over two quarters, well read 100 lines of the play each week in Greek, paying attention to how Euripides innovates the epic tradition and reflects late-5th century Athenian politics on stage in presenting the girl who willingly gave her body for Greece. There will be no class October 3, November 7 and 28, and December 5.
