Course Description

We will read and discuss four of the mature novels Vladimir Nabokov wrote in Russian while living as an exile in Berlin: Laughter in the Dark (1933), Despair (1934), Invitation to a Beheading (1936), and The Gift (1938). Even if you have read these works before, please be prepared to reread them, following the reading schedule in the syllabus (usually about 90-120 pages per week).
For our first class, please read pp. 7-134 of Laughter in the Dark.
