Course Description

The course centers on Honore de Balzac’s and Gustav Flaubert's most famous novels — Pere Goriot (1835) and Madame Bovary (1856). In addition, every week we will discuss a short story by Guy de Maupassant or several pieces from Charles Baudelaire’s book of prose poems, Paris Spleen (1869). While reference will be made to the relevant literary trends and movements (e. g. symbolism, romanticism, decadence, realism, and naturalism) our attention will focus on how these writers chose to narrate social reality and transformation, and the consequences of their choices.
