Course Description

How do you discover your strongest story or essay material? And once you have done so, how do you make each draft stronger than the last? This course will give you tools to work independently in order to find your story and the best way of telling it in fiction or nonfiction. Close reading of the moment-by-moment choices facing published authors will inform your own decision-making as you identify your most compelling voice, learn to sharpen seeing, find the best point of view for your story, and explore the most effective ways of moving through time. Journals will be especially valuable, a place for discovery and play with imaginative problem solving in first drafts as well as revised, completed stories or essays. In-class exercises, word games, in-class writing, and read-back of in-class writing will be useful for ongoing material needing revision or with material discovered in this course for the first time.
