Course Description

This course is an introduction to the history and culture of Buddhism through images and objects. While Buddhism is often portrayed with a focus on doctrine, philosophy, or psychological aspects, its origins and transmission through different contexts, as well as its presence in everyday life, are strongly relied on visual and material culture. Rather than analyzing such images and objects from an art-historical perspective, we will use them as windows into the varied history of Buddhism and as tools to discuss religious practice, identity, and imagination. We will also discuss objects in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
