Course Description

In Emma and Persuasion, Jane Austen creates protagonists vividly embedded in their families, variegated settings and natures: Emma Woodhouse, whose cocky confidence in her matchmaking creates mayhem for many and alienates Mr. Knightly, who is her true friend and fit helpmeet; and Anne Elliot, whose engagement to Captain Frederick Wentworth was discouraged by loving, prudential intercession by mentor Lady Randall years earlier. Through misadventures, the story's unfolding reveals and crystallizes Anne's steadfast commitment to him, and his to her. They discover their humanity, as we do through them. Austen's eye and voice are ever keen and considered.
