Course Description

In the Middle Ages, the Holy Office of the Inquisition governed inquiries into Christian heretics and inevitably collided with mystics, whose thought or practice was outside the norm. This course will thread two approaches: first, we will examine the medieval inquisition through recent scholarship and primary sources; second, we will read selections of spiritual giants and unfold the stories of their different collisions and trials with the inquisition. These include: Marguerite Porete, Meister Eckhart, Teresa of Avila, and Ignatius of Loyola.
