Course Description

This course is a comprehensive introduction to the work of filmmakers associated with the Nouvelle Vague in France: those who began their careers as film critics writing for Cahiers du Cinéma; the so-called Left Bank directors; and others associated with the movement.

Course Outline

The films for the course are available to stream on Amazon Prime, or on the Criterion Channel. In addition to the films selected for viewing, we will also read and discuss selected criticism and reviews published in Cahiers du Cinéma by filmmakers who began their careers as critics for the journal. These articles will be posted to canvas as pdf files.
