Clare Pearson on Exploration Through Literature

Course Description

In this final course in a three-quarter sequence, students continue their exploration of Journey to the West, one of the Four Classic Novels of Chinese literature, published in sixteenth-century Ming China. Deeply embedded in Chinese culture and the teachings of the “three religions,” Journey tells the mythologized tale of Tang-era Buddhist monk Xuanzang—and his 17-year journey from China to India. Throughout the course, students will read and discuss the novel, paying special attention to cultural context and philosophical and religious themes.
