Course Description

The essential embodiment of Italian Romantic nationalism, Giuseppe Verdi's 27 operas form the cornerstone of the international repertory. In this course, we will explore Verdi's seminal early works as well as epochal and mature masterpieces such as Aida and Rigoletto. We will also turn to Verdi's heir, Giacomo Puccini, who possessed an acute, uncanny theatrical sense. His operas, including Tosca and Turandot, are among the most viscerally effective stage works in history. Sessions will include listening, watching, and analyzing music and text.
