Course Description

Examine the history of America as "contested ground" from World War I to the present. This final course in a three-quarter sequence combines primary source readings with excerpts from the New York Times’ 1619 Project, Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of America, and Wilfred McClay’s Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story. Students will consider the origins and meaning of liberty and equality—and the conditions for a just and stable democratic republic. There are no prerequisites; students may take this third course without completing the previous two.
