Course Description

Geographic discovery. Scientific advancement. Political upheaval. Throughout the seventeenth-century, Europeans witnessed firsthand the rise of the modern state—and with it, the transformation of culture. In this course, students will explore these societal shifts, reading critical works from the period by Galileo, Bunyan, Descartes, Bacon, Hobbes, Moliere, and Locke.
