Course Description

In the years following the Civil War, an astonishing body of literature seeking to realize the promise of citizenship for African Americans emerged. These novels, short stories, and poems were crafted by a remarkable and diverse group of writers; some of them came to the American South as postwar tourists and decided to stay, others were native southerners who felt they had to leave. In this course, students will explore the best-selling, popular works that helped shape the contours of Reconstruction, influencing public opinion and giving voice to the aspirations of millions who were newly free.
