Course Description

What role did commercial whaling play in American history? Why did attitudes toward whaling shift over time? And how did this industry influence society and culture? This course will explore these questions—and feature a guest appearance from Nathaniel Philbrick, award-winning author of In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, a historical account of the nineteenth-century maritime disaster that inspired Moby Dick.
