Course Description

In an effort to avoid any form of government oversight or censorship, Hollywood proposed to regulate itself by means of a production code. This code was formulated in 1930 but was not enforced until the second half of 1934. In that brief window of time, Hollywood produced some of the wildest, most risqué films of the classic period. Drug use, pre- and extra-marital sex, homosexuality, abortion, divorce, and racial parity were just some of the themes these films addressed and delighted in addressing. A clear and accurate understanding of the Golden Age of Motion Pictures is impossible without a familiarity with pre-code Hollywood.
