Course Description

Is there a specific ethic or way of living that is foundational to modern capitalist economics? This class will be an examination of the “spirit” of capitalism, with a close readings of significant texts in economic thought. From the origins of the ideas of capitalism in Adam Smith, it will look at Benjamin Franklin’s commonsensical teachings, and concentrate on close readings of several key texts, including Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, two works by John Maynard Keynes, Friedrich Hayek’s The Fatal Conceit, and Jane Jacob’s Systems of Survival, as we seek to discern the moral framework for our worldly way of life.
