Course Description

The Western tradition has been defined as a 2500 year long dialogue on the great ideas that are the bases for human flourishing. In this discussion class we will be examining central political ideas from the ancients to the present, looking at such topics as Law, Liberty, Revolution, Citizenship, Constitution, Aristocracy, Oligarchy, and of course, Democracy. Our starting point will be the essays that Mortimer Adler wrote in his “Syntopicon,” the conceptual index to the Great Books of the Western World (1952). We will be providing additional short selections as needed from the great books, and students are encouraged to bring in contemporary readings on these topics. There are no pre-requisites for the class.
