Course Description

Chicago has a long history of international engagement. By the 1850s, Chicago’s strategic location, commercial success, and rapid population growth were evident, and foreign governments began building a formal diplomatic presence in the city by establishing consulates. Today over 80 countries maintain full or honorary consulates in Chicago making it home to one of the largest diplomatic communities in the United States. This seminar will explore the history of consulates in Chicago and also provide an overview of subnational diplomacy conducted by Chicago mayors and the City Council.
