Course Description

The American landscape has inspired a distinctive literature which occupies itself both with a careful description of the natural world and with an exploration of the metaphorical evocations of its diversity and vastness. We will read some classics of American nature writing including essays by Thoreau and John Muir, Barry Lopez's Arctic Dreams, and Terry Tempest Williams' Refuge, and consider the material, cultural, and spiritual heritage of our wild places from sea to shining sea, and the stakes of their preservation.
