Course Description

In a (hopefully) post-pandemic world, we re-examine this play about the disease-ridden, quarantined & marooned Greek hero Philoctetes - discarded years ago by the powers-that-be, but now needed to win the war at Troy. Arguably Sophocles’ most narratively arresting extant play, we read aloud, translate, and discuss approximately 120 lines per session with special attention to how a 5th century audience in the twilight of Athenian empire might have received it. Prerequisite: At least two years of prior study or instruction in ancient Greek.
