HUAS32002 - Foundations of American Foreign Policy

Course Description

Foundations of American Foreign Policy would aim to examine and assess the foreign relations of the United States from its founding period until its rise as a global power with the Spanish American War in 1898. The goal of this course would be to understand the foundational principles, ideas, and ideals of U.S. foreign policy. Course readings and discussions would consider America's stated founding ideals and patterns in subsequent policies, history and habit, national interests and ambitions. Reading would include original sources in order to assess the transformation of the U.S. from a small, fragile republic into a global power.
