Course Description

While Kant’s magnum opus sometimes scares readers off, those who have a guide and persist with it are usually stunned by the consistent logic of the work and the powerful vision and scope of its conclusions. His response to Hume’s radical skepticism, the “First Critique,” as it is generally known, presents a “Copernican revolution” in how we look at the nature of human reason and what legitimate conclusions we can draw from it, taking up along the way issues like the reality of human freedom. It remains foundational to the understanding of many scientists, and also becomes the basis for his larger system. We will work carefully through the text together in class.
