Course Description

How is your good writing connected to how your readers read? Whatever your field or your audience, your writing style can meet your readers’ implicit expectations about how sentences, paragraphs, and whole pieces are organized. Working with Prof. Joseph Williams’ renowned book entitled Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace, which is illustrated throughout with pertinent examples, this discussion course develops your written pieces in interaction with pragmatic principles and your goals. With this reader-based orientation to writing, you’ll be empowered to select among stylistic options to achieve the effects that you want. How can your piece of writing be memorable through the balance and symmetry among its components? How can your writing be ethical by ‘writing to others as we would have them write to us’? These pragmatic principles about writing style can be implemented in any writing genre – professional writing, academic writing, nonfiction writing, and creative writing.
