Course Description

Despite the impression that regimes are stable entities established once and for all, the recent experiences of Eastern Europe suggest that political systems are in constant flux. What we thought we knew about regime change, democratic consolidation, and democratic stability has been called into question before our very eyes. The end of communist autocracies following the collapse of the Soviet Union did not allow new democracies to take root without obstacles. Russia presents an example of failed democratization. Its current trajectory of advancing autocratization is spreading across the European continent, while other post-communist countries attempt to stay the democratic course and remain members of international organizations. This course will use the current events in Eastern Europe as a foil to examine regime change dynamics with special attention paid to democratic backsliding, autocratization, and transitional justice.
