Course Description

History is to civilized society what memory is to individual identity, and America’s identity in this divided time has seldom been more contested. Was this nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to a proposition in 1776? Or was America founded in original sin when the first slave ship arrived in 1619? We will examine this “contested ground” using secondary sources and primary texts, including the 1619 Project and selected responses, looking at four major events – colonization, the Revolutionary era, Civil War and Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights movement – as we seek to find some common ground for our national story.
