Course Description

This three-quarter sequence will examine the world in the 20th Century, from 1900 through to 2001. The first course will focus on the world of European empires, leading to the crisis of the Great War and its aftermath, from around 1900 to the beginning of the Great Depression. It will emphasize the relation between politics and society, with contemporary reflection on the meaning of historical events. Rather than a survey, this class will use selections from primary documents published in the period, supplemented by the works of modern historians, to illuminate the development of the world in the 20th Century. Winter 2023 will examine the period between 1932 and 1968, from the Depression through World War II and the Cold War. Spring 2023 will focus on the period from 1968 to 2001. There are no prerequisites; students may take one, two, or all three courses.
