Course Description

This course will read relatively new books on Chicago history, politics, and sociology. This session will look at Chicago’s meatpacking industry, the Great Migration, and Urban Politics. The course will feature Chicago books including a book on the Slaughterhouse (meatpacking in Chicago) and the great migration of African Americans to Chicago in the late 19th and 20th centuries. We will also look at the administration of Richard M Daley, who was responsible for the transformation of the city of Chicago from an industrial manufacturing city to a global city supported economically by tourism and entertainment.
