Course Description

“. . . all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea . ..” says Melville in Moby-Dick, and, in a letter, “I love all men who dive. Any fish can swim near the surface, but it takes a great whale to go down the stairs five miles or more…” By way of close reading of crucial passages, we will undertake our own five-mile dive into our unofficial national epic, the “most startling and … most characteristic product of the American imagination” (Richard Chase).
