Course Description

This third class of a three-quarter sequence will examine the world in the 20th Century, from 1968 to 2001, emphasizing the relation between politics and society, with contemporary reflection on the meaning of historical events. Rather than a survey, this class will use selections from primary source documents published in the period, supplemented by the works of modern historians, to illuminate the development of the world in the 20th Century. The autumn course focused on the world of European empires, leading to the crisis of the Great War and its aftermath, from around 1900 to the beginning of the Great Depression. Winter 2023 examined the middle third of the century, between 1932 and 1968, from the Depression through World War II and the Cold War. Spring 2023 focuses on the recent past, from 1968 to 2001. There are no prerequisites; new students are welcome to the Spring class without the earlier classes.
