Course Description

After the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era Southerners sought in earnest to “take back” the South. What emerged was the period of Jim Crow and Segregation between Euro and African American citizens. This course describes and analyzes persistent racial, social, and economic problems faced by both Euro and African Americans after the period of the Civil War. In this course, we will read some of the classics written by African American writers Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Richard Wright, and also the classic formulation and defense of the Southern Agrarian Tradition. We will also consider the two great legal formulations that established and later repealed Jim Crow with respect to public schools and public accommodations.
