Course Description

Homer’s Iliad, chronicling the ten year siege of Troy, and Odyssey, chronicling one man’s ten year attempt to return home after Troy, have been considered by most authors to be the foundation stones of Western literature. As oral poems, they were meant to be accessible and entertaining, appealing to a mass audience with tales of heroes, love, conflict, and betrayal. In this course, we’ll contextualize Homer’s two great epics within Ancient Greek culture and society, learn Greek mythology, and appreciate what made these works so immensely popular and entertaining in their day. Reading assignments will be approximately forty pages a day, divided between reading and listening to (free) audiobook versions.
