Course Description

If it is true that poetry gives us knowledge, as some prominent critics claim, then we can ask, first, what kind of knowledge, and second, how should we read in order to acquire it? This class is intended as both a reflection on the nature of poetry and a practicum in the reading of it. We will read both classic and contemporary sources—philosophical, literary critical, and poetic—together with a few of the greatest poems in the English language.
