Course Description

Place and environment have always been great sources of inspiration for poets, from Dante’s Inferno to Jorie Graham’s collection, Place. In this 4- week generative workshop we will explore what influence place, both real and imagined, has on our own writing. We will explore how the invisible maps of our childhood experiences stand as templates for our own poems. We will discuss place-based poems, including eco-poems that focus on environmental issues, as well as everything from rooms to sacred spaces.  We will use writing prompts to explore these questions and others, through in-class writing. Students will have the opportunity to share the results of these playful experiments with the group in an informal manner as well as a more formal critique of later drafts of poems.
