Course Description

Anton Chekhov's short stories, widely recognized as among the best ever written, are filled with his unique blend of understated humor, pathos, and humanity. In this course, we will work our way through a selection of standout works that span the course of his career, including favorites such as "Ward No. 6", "In the Ravine", "The Lady With the Little Dog", "Anna on the Neck","The Teacher of Literature", and others. Using the 2014 Norton Critical Edition, which includes a selection of the best classic translations as well as 25 new translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, we will read the entire collection over the 8 weeks (roughly 62 pages/week), focusing our discussion on the most important stories and covering as many as time and close reading allows. Some supplementary material may be added in pdf form. Please read up through "A Little Game" for the first class.
