Course Description

The Book of Psalms is a collection of 150 poems in the Bible. Some of the Psalms recount stories and others make assertions about humanity and the divine, and the relation between them, all in verse form. While much is "lost in translation", the symbols, motifs and ideas open the world of the Bible to readers more directly than the narrative of Ancient Israel. In this course, we will learn as much as we can in translation about "Hebrew parallelism", the primary form of poetic expression in the Bible. We will also see certain patterns of poems such as "praise" and "lament" that have been inspiring and comforting to readers of the centuries, and have become part of Jewish and Christian liturgy
