Course Description

The book by Henry Fielding, The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling (1749), is considered by many to be the first and best of English novels. Though the title would suggest something different than a work of fiction, it may be an indication of its genre. The structure and length of Tom Jones, having three parts of six books each, reaches epic scale, and the plot twists and turns mimic The Odyssey and Don Quixote. Set against the background of the Jacobite Rebellions, the ideal and lowly characters likely reflect criticism of eighteenth century English society through Tom's standing and actions. Tom Jones would be a good choice for a summer read.
